Manifold Gauge Set

The most-used tool on your truck. Get a 4-valve manifold rated for 800 psig high side / 500 psig low side with A2L-compatible hoses. Digital manifolds (Testo, Fieldpiece, CPS, Yellow Jacket) cost more but eliminate reading errors, display saturated temperatures, and often include built-in thermocouples for one-shot superheat/subcooling. Learn to read your manifold correctly — the gauge only helps if you can interpret it.

Vacuum Pump

Required for proper system evacuation. Minimum 5 CFM two-stage for residential; 7–10 CFM for light commercial. A two-stage pump pulls a deeper vacuum than a single-stage and is mandatory for non-condensable removal. Pairs with a digital vacuum gauge (micron gauge) connected directly to the system — never trust the pump's own gauge or a manifold-mounted gauge, both read artificially high.

Recovery Machine and Cylinders

Required by EPA Section 608 before opening any refrigerant circuit. Get a recovery machine rated for the refrigerants you handle (R-410A, R-454B, R-32 — make sure it's A2L listed). Keep at least one DOT-certified recovery cylinder per refrigerant, clearly labeled. Never mix refrigerants in a recovery cylinder — it contaminates the entire batch and the reclaimer will reject it. Leak Detector

An electronic leak detector rated for A2L refrigerants is essential. Heated diode and infrared are the two common technologies. Infrared is more sensitive and doesn't false-alarm on hydrocarbons; heated diode responds faster. Soap bubble solution is still your backup for confirming a hit. Ultrasonic detectors work for some leaks but are less reliable in noisy environments.
