You shot 30 seconds of video and it's somehow 200 MB. You're not imagining it — iPhone videos really are enormous, and it's not a bug. It's the deliberate result of three settings stacked together: 4K resolution, high bitrate, and HDR color. This guide explains the actual math behind iPhone video size, why Apple made these choices, and what you can do about it.
A video's file size comes from bitrate × duration. iPhone videos are big because their bitrate is huge — and the bitrate is huge because of three deliberate quality choices.
4K means roughly 8.3 million pixels per frame, four times more than 1080p. Encoding all those pixels takes bits. A 4K clip at a fixed bitrate-per-pixel will always be about 4× the size of the same clip at 1080p.
Apple defaults to 4K because modern iPhones can capture and display it beautifully. But for most phone-screen viewing, the extra pixels over 1080p are nearly invisible — the file size isn't.
Even at 4K, bitrate can vary wildly. iPhone footage typically ships at 30-50 Mbps for HDR clips — far above what's needed for phone or laptop viewing. Apple prioritizes quality over storage; the camera has bits to spare, so it uses them. For comparison, Netflix streams 4K at 15-25 Mbps and looks fine.
Recent iPhones default to Dolby Vision HDR, which captures 10-bit color instead of standard 8-bit. That's 25% more color data per pixel, adding about 25% to the bitrate. HDR looks noticeably richer on HDR-capable screens (recent iPhones, Apple displays, modern TVs), but the file size cost is real.

See the leap? 1080p at 30 fps is 65 MB/min. 4K HDR at 60 fps is ~400 MB/min — six times larger. That's why a 30-second clip from a recent iPhone can easily hit 200 MB.
If the files are so big, why doesn't Apple fix it? Because Apple is optimizing for the opposite problem: capturing maximum quality so the video looks great forever. Storage gets cheaper over time; you can't go back and re-capture a moment in higher quality. Apple's bet is that you'd rather have a giant, beautiful file than a small, soft one — and they're usually right, until you try to email it.
The downside is that sharing and storage are your problem, not Apple's. That's where compression comes in.
Two approaches, depending on whether you're fixing past videos or future ones:
